Georgina Smith Relief Artist
Georgina creates unique relief art paintings at her studio in Brighton. Each artwork is built up of multiple layers of card, cut to create a 3D image, which is then drawn and painted. Her paintings centre on buildings that have a sense of nostalgia and history.

This commissioned piece was really fun to do. Hockings Dairy Cream Ices is a regular sight on the seafront at Appledore in Devon. It is a family run business that has been going since the 1930's and their dairy ice cream is still as popular today as it was then. The challenge in making this in relief was to get the rounded feel of the vehicle and tyres. The curtains were hand painted and the lightbulbs are made from beads.

Built in 1861, Pells Pool is the oldest documented freshwater lido in the UK. Judging by the font on this current building I imagine that existing ticket booth and shop was built in the 1950's. I love the contrast between the blue and white with the red lettering. On this relief I actually used sticks for the tree trunks to add even more depth.

Model Fish Fryer in Fiveways has been referred to as Brighton's Twin Peaks fish and chip shop. You can see why, with its unusual roof and wood panelled interior. I was drawn to its bold orange lettering and 1950's tiling which I applied using black vinyl.
